For over 35 years, the School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM) has refined a distinctive vision of hospitality and tourism education and become a symbol of excellence in the field. From humble beginnings as a diploma-conferring department, the SHTM has risen to become one of the largest hospitality and tourism schools in Asia and amongst the top such schools worldwide. With more than 70 academics drawing from 22 countries and regions, the School is ranked among the top hotel and tourism schools in the world, exemplifying our motto of Leading Hospitality and Tourism. The SHTM was designated by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) as one of its global Education and Training Network Centres in 1999. In April 2001, the School became one of the first educational institutions to receive the UNWTO’s TedQual Certification, a quality assurance system for tourism education, training and research. The SHTM is currently a member of the UNWTO Knowledge Network.
In 2005, the SHTM was ranked No. 4 in the world and No. 1 in Asia according to a study published in the August issue of Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Research. In 2009, the School was ranked No. 2 internationally among hotel and tourism schools based on research and scholarship, according to a study published in the November issue of Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Research. In 2012, the SHTM was bestowed the McCool Breakthrough Award by the International Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education (I-CHRIE) recognizing its breakthrough in the form of its teaching and research hotel – Hotel ICON – the heart of the School’s innovative approach to hospitality and tourism education. In 2014-2015, the School was ranked No. 1 in the world in Tourism and Services areas according to the University Ranking by Academic Performance (URAP) Research Laboratory.
In 2017/2018, the SHTM was rated No. 1 in the world in the “Hospitality and Tourism Management” category according to Shanghai Ranking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects. It was also placed as No. 1 in the world in the “Hospitality, Leisure, Sport & Tourism” subject area by the CWUR Rankings by Subject 2017, and ranked among the top 3 “Hospitality and Leisure Management” institutions globally in the QS World University Rankings by Subject in 2017/2018.Link to : http://hotelschool.shtm.polyu.edu.hk/eng/index.jsp
